This autumn, the DSA will be introducing a new driving test. Well it's the same basic driving test but with some changes!
What are the changes to the driving test?
There are two major changes.
1. Instead of two manoeuvres, the candidate will only be asked to perform one out of: reverse parking, reversing around a corner and turn in the road. As before the parking exercise may be carried out as a Parallel park in the road or as a bay parking exercise in a car park where one is available.
2. There will be a short period of "independent driving"
This will take the form of either
a) an instruction to follow road signs to a specified destination, or
b) a set of directions given including several junctions which the candidate needs to remember and follow.
Will the new driving test be harder?
The DSA claim that in the latest trials, "pass rates" have been unaffected by the changes. If that's the case one wonders whether the changes will really improve driving standards.
When doe the new driving test come in?
The launch date is October 4th 2010
